Good morning, boneheads!
A complicated, expensive mixed drink with premium liquors that someone forgot to add ice to and shake thoroughly. That’s what they look like at the moment. Two star players added to top-6, their PP had significant changes to both units over the last few weeks. It will take some time to gel. They do not want to fall all the way down to the wild card position (very unlikely), but the rest isn’t that important. GG has 20 games to make it work. Plenty of time.
Not looking for excuses, but it’s hard to ignore. They keep playing shorthanded, especially on defense where they are forced to play 5, with 2 out of them being #6/7, without any prior experience handling heavy minutes, and against a desperate team that’s still very much trying to make it, no less. It became even more obvious once they came out to play after second intermission. They needed to have more support from their forwards, and didn’t get it. It’ll get even more complicated with Motte out.
Don’t get me started on the NHL’s purely arbitrary decision, and how they decided to read the CBA “Emergency Recall Rule”. But if I read their decision correctly, NY will have to wait until either Lindgren or Miller come back, play another game shorthanded, and only then will be eligible for a recall(s). That’s why it’s important to accumulate points early. You never know. But, c’mon, where is the NHLPA to step in and confront the league? This isn’t just NY issue. It impacts players health, ability to recuperate, and even their pensions that depend on the amount of games they play. Where is Mr. Walsh, still pushing papers on his Secretary of Labor desk ? 🙂

As a kid, Brass was babysitter to Wedgy Vigneault’s children.
They will play the Bruins down a forward and a D on Saturday. A respectable loss say 3 to 1 or 4 to 2 would be a positive outcome for them. They are probably only going to 12 forwards and 7 D for the rest of the season. They need to deal with it.
They have 4 days off after Saturday. They need to use the time to heal and build a team. Right now they are just a bunch of guys who show up to play games every day or two. They have no identity. In the short term Kane made them worse last night. They had tightened things up a bit to win a couple of games while shorthanded. Trying to accommodate him damaged any cohesion they were developing. It completely disrupted their PP which had shown signs of life recently.
It’s up to GG to make this work. If they are going to be a skill team-like the Hawks were- they can’t take a PP collar like they did last night. The major should have put the game away for them but they did very little and were lucky to avoid a shorty. Drury may want to say something to them as well. It is his decisions that have gotten them to this point for better or worse.
I admire Valley’s truth-telling. (except when he toes the corporate line, which seems not too often.

This is Drury and GG’s team going forward. It seems every contender has toughened up for the post season except, well you know. But I’m not being cry baby am I? Honestly I’m hoping for the best, but at least we still have our 1st rd pick. Thank goodness the window is still open, but there just might be a storm on the horizon. Gotta love this team.

There is no balance in the way the lines are currently set up. You fix it from within by breaking up the kid line, or you can attempt to address the 3rd line center situation with a trade.

I asked the same question Admiral. Now that Kane’s here, I’m all in. I get the thinking behind bringing him here at the low price they paid, but I also think Drury needs to be creative and do what he can to bolster the 4c spot.
A minor league trade for a guy like Kevin Rooney,(if that would even be allowed prior to the playoffs starting), was a thought. I’m not sure if that helps much, but it might be something. Was hoping for something more significant. Not even sure who I’d target now.

I don’t think they will go LTIR route. Still 40 days to go. NHL reserves its right for independent medical evaluation if they think a player is on LTIR for longer than his injury warrants. They can not only fine you (who cares), but make you play shorthanded during playoffs if they determine a player should be cleared to play

I honestly wish Kane never made himself available. Tarestanko is back to being Taresenko, and we could have/should have made a move for a bottom six checker other than Motte.
Kane, while I’m sure to some degree needs to adjust to the team as Vladi Daddy did, looked like a shell of his former self during his elite days.
Yeah yeah, I know…. I’m “glass half empty”, but were my eyes deceiving me? And why did we really think the move was to add more of what we already had, rather than what we lacked and needed?!
I said it before regarding the Kane trade and I’ll say it again- Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. I think Drury and co. will come to regret this.
All of that to say, I’m rooting like hell for this to work and you bet your a** I’ll be watching every game.

I think we are singing a different song this morning if a couple of his nifty passes/shots connected last night and they scored a couple of PP goals.
Not signing Kane and concentrating only on getting 4C would not make this team better. I think if Drury knew Kane was going to be available he would not get Motte and concentrate on getting a solid 4C who is also very good faceoff guy.
Took Tarasenko some time to get going but Kaner better score a hat trick in his first period!

I still think they should go LTIR route ILB. I believe Motte has had more than one concussion and I think Lawyer Gary would tread very lightly on medical evaluations pertaining in that area despite how much he would like to make them play shorthanded …and on a secondary note…screw Bettman
This is my take on this team being imbalanced. It’s still very doable, even if you leave your top two lines intact. So long as they do what they are paid to do, and that’s to spend a good amount of time in the O-zone, score a good amount of PP goals, Trocheck, Zib and Kreider continue to kill penalties, it’s still a very, very dangerous team. What would make them a serious contender, and probably win it for them, is the 3rd line. With one caveat. You would need Chytil to play a very solid two-way hockey. This line is going to face whatever is left after their opponents try to match two top lines. Not sure Chytil can

I completely agree Chytil is the un-missing link. A 3rd line center is the only answer to where they are now. I just don’t think Drury has the seeds to move Chytil. I also don’t think he knows who to get.
Also agree te Chytil and that third line centre spot continues to be the biggest “issue” to a solid roster on this team and it’s balance. They need a 4C as well but the third line centre is the lynchpin to the balance and it was an issue at the beginning of the season and is even more glaring now.

Bobbyo, you have a point. I don’t think they will go the LTIR route, but I doubt there will be a dumb enough independent specialist who would clear someone to play after concussion, and still complains on headaches.

Not bad, because of the type of players on the wing and lack of d capable centres that are also a bit rugged and with some overtly physical game and faceoff ability, I think you have to leave Trocheck with Panarin/Kane.
Until the cap allows for a centre call up, I think laffo Meeka stinko is one line, Trocheck with the littles, and Kreider with kakko/or Goodrow and the square peg. That leaves rotational overflow for the last two guys until the rangers are able to call up a forward for 4 full lines. Just my opinion though, and who the hell really knows lol.

It’s not all about the goals, which was my point. Especially in that role, on this team with the other personnel it has and what kind of players it needs. Been an issue before the past few weeks and more glaring of one now.
Again, you can overlook one dimensional players deficiencies in other parts of their game in a hard cap league IF they are phenomenal at that one dimension…that is not the case here.

We will get a test of the “You go get him” hypothesis for the rest of the season. Drury was a lion not a mouse as Slats would say. We have already written off tomorrow game against the Bs and just hope no one else gets hurt. They then have 4 days for acclimation and team building. It shouldn’t be nearly as tough in Montreal on Thursday. Can anyone think of a case in the past when a team acquired players of the stature of Tarasenko and Kane and it worked out for them? Are we in uncharted territory here?

I stopped counting at 150 the “centres” listed on puckpedia that make 2.7 mil or less. Not all of them obviously shut down centres or fits etc, but a reasonable pool to draw from if so inclined (don’t think that drury is at this point).
Not to mention the handful of guys that several folks here have bandied about over the course of the season that meet the criteria.

Last year at this time I was pretty excited for the upcoming playoffs. For some reason I just don’t have that same feeling this year. Bruins, Bolts, devils, Leafs, and Canes are just too good. I believe the Rangers are better this season than last season.
But — I believe many teams are better than last season, in the East. Boston, Derbils, Toronto are much better. Tampa is still dangerous. Carolina is still excellent. Islanders aren’t great, but aren’t a joke either.
You guys realize NYR are losing to teams like DET, WSH, and OTT to help keep the NYI out?

I listen to Valley and Staples podcast and Valley had the Rangers among the league’s worst in both odd man rushes allowed and goals allowed off the rush. They need to fix that if they want to have a long run. The special teams also need to improve. They need to more responsible defensively. I’m not sure how the rock stars help them do that. Let’s see what happens in the last 20 games.

1. Put in a really good effort.
2. Management takes a good look at how the bees are constructed.

I remember going to an Oral Roberts/St. Johns BB game many years ago during which one of the St. Johns players went down with a serious leg injury. Oral Roberts was in attendance and did the laying of hands thing on the player. After that they put the kid on a stretcher and brough him to the hospital. Al Michaels wasn’t there to ask “Do you believe in miracles?” Only with Smokey Robinson.
