A little payback for one of the most painful losses our boys suffered this season at MSG, no doubt. But something else more important to watch, and it’s been slowly developing this season. Remember those two lottery “consensus” picks they had in two consecutive years? The two kids that were busts and were included in every single trade for anyone who was an impending UFA over 30? Good thing nobody listened. This line is starting to not only be difficult to defend against, they are starting to dominate some of their shifts. Kakko to Lafreniere to help to tie it, Kakko and Lafreniere to score in SO to win it. Music to our ears, isn’t it?
Right back to it tonight. This one promises to be a lot of fun.

I don’t understand why the Oilers are tying themselves into a pretzel to chase Karlson. Do they need to improve their PP? He doesn’t help them defend better. They didn’t forecheck the Rangers much last night. The Rangers didn’t have their usual difficulty clearing the zone like they do against strong teams.

Solid road trip making the late night exciting. Not sure if I should be happy that the Isles beat the Pens. It opens up the gap a bit more for the Rangers to stay out of the WC slots but the Isles did slip into playoff position. At least it wasn’t a 3 point game. I did realize that the Ranger have more points than anyone in the Western conference. East must be beating West regularly this season.
Great move by Toronto. If their goaltending stays healthy, they’re a legit contender. Carolina was rumored to be one of O’Reilly’s landing spots. By taking Acciari too, there’s fewer centers out there. I expect Tampa to counter since they’ll be playing the Leafs. Boston, Carolina and the Rangers all looking for centers. Drury shouldn’t wait.

Admiral, I’m sure you’ll agree that if you don’t think a certain team who plays next to a race track is gonna barely get in playoffs and beat the #1 seed Bruins then you haven’t been paying attention.
In his time as GM, Drury has targeted guys who have a history with key core players on this team. Obviously, that’s not always possible, but if it’s a choice between a few players, that could be a factor. FWIW, Domi played with Trocheck after the deadline and in the playoffs last year.

I’ll worry about NYI when they play NYR in the playoffs. Otherwise, could not care less what they do now.
Last year’s deadline was a game of “Six Degrees of Jacob Trouba”. So far, it’s been about Panerin.
Apparently in stead of ripping them to shreds after the first, Gallant told them they were playing well, and were not losing the game.
No Wonder why his players love playing for him.
Bjugstad played with Trocheck and for Gallant in Florida. Again, FWIW.

Once again….Since December 5th, the Rangers are 22-4-3….And yet you guys want to talk about the Islanders and their playoff chances and how GMs are looking to fleece us. I’m actually starting to feel bad for some of you.
If drury is smart, he gets a guy with another year or two left on his contract so it’s not the same routine over and over at the deadline every season.

Preferably a guy that can play 3rd or 4th line centre to maximize the position and draw ability. It’s ideally 2 players but the situation isn’t ideal so….

It will never be “perfect” though. Any improvements are better than none, so it’ll be fun regardless.
Wicky, I will get pounced for saying this but to me, “bold” would be to put an end to this kid line aka the liability line. Trade Kakko or Chytil and save on their eventual salary increases. Goodrow plays top 9 RW and you bring in a 3C and a 4C that are the polar opposite of Chytil in terms of defensive capabilities and faceoff ability.

That’s 100% the smart deadline move that you are talking about. Your obviously not moving either guy for picks, it’s for a player that makes the team better now and going forward.
It may not happen by deadline, but you can’t lose guys for nothing. If an opportunity presents itself, drury should jump at it if it makes sense down the road.
That flat cap coupled with the Bally’s thing I mentioned a few weeks ago (and again a few days ago) and now several of the national talking heads are mentioning it…it’s going to be a fun ride regardless seeing how drury handles it.
And yes, GG needs to do a better job with the lines for playoff hockey instead of the pond hockey lines. In the playoffs teams are t going to give up 5 and 6 goals a game all the time so the forward lines need to be better defencively.
Me thinks the post trade deadline team should be more balanced for 200’ and line more appropriately shuffled.
At least if drury and GG do their jobs lol.

I happened to watch the Edmonton feed this morning. Their play by play and analyst crew sounded consistently scared of our boys. They should be.

Keep them with their current centre and one needs to play elsewhere (most likely Lafrenière as he’s the most versatile).

I was in my prime and I wasn’t at all taken back by the trades. They needed to get tougher to play against, and they did. They need to do the same thing this year with the 4th line.
Having a 4th line that is tougher to play against doesn’t mean squat if your other 3 lines are cotton candy.
You need tough to play against lines throughout your lineup…

Well, that was a courageous move in ‘94. But imagine what would happen to Smith and Keenan if there wasn’t Matteau that year? Or what would happen in 2014 if King wasn’t sitting on King’s legs?
I think the way he’s been progressing I’d file Lafreniere in the untouchable folder. And I’d be very, very careful about trading Kakko. It’d better be for a significant, and long term improvement in other important position(s). I think Kakko is just scratching the surface.
94 and 14 were polar opposites though. In 94 the pressure probably wasn’t ever any higher in organizational history. ’14 they were an ‘ok’ team playing with house money once they got back into the series in the series vs. Pens.
Agree that it was a courageous deadline and we saw the same formula fail in 95 while almost working again in 96.
I don’t think the trade TO made put them over the top but I think it was what the GM had to do and he did it. I’d take those guys 7 days a week over a pedestrian Tarasenko or the like because it addresses an area where they are most vulnerable despite the offensive party lights.
I get that the team is on a great run they win a lot they score a lot they have all these guys that score and young guys that are scorers or will be scorers for a long time but when you have glaring flaws aside from scoring maybe address them by sacraficing from a position of strength?
I think they still have the time and enough blue chips to do it.
The biggest difference between 94, and 14, was Mike Richter.

Barbashev might just get him another first. It would depend on if he’s an expiring contract though.

If you trade for sturm, get the sharks to eat 50%. He only makes 2 mil, they’d only have the 1 mil to deal with on their cap for another year or two and the rangers get a solid bottom 6 centre for 1 mil per for a couple of tight cap seasons.

Trading Chytil at the deadline for a cost controlled 200 foot center might seem bold or even reckless to some. But look at Amonte’s numbers in his first two nhl seasons with the Rangers.

Amonte btw went on to score another 755 points in 1012 games after leaving the Rangers. I always loved Amonte and always hoped for a return even later in his career but the moral of the story is guess what? Sometimes you trade players that are going to be good hockey players in the NHL.

Make a fun move and trade for old good Kane through 3rd parties (like O’Reilly), If he wants so much to play for us, rejecting Isles invitation, he can do it just for a symbolic $1 (like Trump) just for the rest of the season.
