Rangers-2, Sharks-3 (OT)

Published by

Good morning, boneheads!

Only players who either didn’t know much about DQ (Trocheck) or didn’t like him (Chytil) played their game. Them decided to give Quinn his first win of the season in NY. That’s my version, and I’m sticking to it.

Kidding aside, it wasn’t so much the Sharks as it was our boys who didn’t come out ready against desperate team, that probably felt embarrassed after 0-5 start. Interestingly, that hasn’t happened much during Gallant’s tenure, but happened very often under DQ’s. If they did come out the way they have way more often than not, this one would’ve been over after these three consecutive PPs. How many games would San Jose win in best of seven against NY? One? Doubt that…

So, DQ was greeted with boos last night, and Staple decided to take this beauty apart with some stats. Be my guest, Arthur

Staple more than happy to overanalyze listless losses.

Last night’s game just continues the long (and tired) tradition of ex-Rangers coming back to Madison Square Garden and having much success.

Not the best game they’ve played by a long shot, other than a few exceptions. But its a point at least.
The booing was a little embarrassing to be honest, Quinn did a decent job when he was here and worked with the roster he was given by Gorton, maybe if Drury had been his GM earlier he might have shared in last season’s success instead of being booted out the door

I said the same thing I think it was after the Jets loss. It’s early but they better figure it out because it isn’t going to be smooth sailing getting out of the Metro.

booing Quinn was lame … he was coach of a rebuilding team not Scotty Bowman. Dud of a game but they are tied for 1st in Metro…they will be fine

Idk what the big deal is. They had a bad game and lost a point to a western conference team desperately needing a win.

I don’t think Quinn deserved to be booed, but he wasn’t very good in NY. He needs to learn a few things before he can be successful. One, this isn’t college. Stop treating these guys as they are in need to have their diapers changed constantly. Let the leaders be the leaders. A coach in this league can’t be the captain at the same time. And two, learn how to adjust on a dime, don’t just try to improve what isn’t working at all.

I’d give VK a shot in Vesey’s spot. I don’t think Vesey is doing much. Igor let the 2nd one slide in under his pad. He has been pretty ordinary so far. 2 out of 5 games in which they took the 3rd period off is a concern. Team D is pretty loose so far too. Lots of room for improvement, but, they are on a pace for 114 points.

Certain teams (and people) looove to come into Dolan’s Ice Palace and put the hurtin’ on them. HOW COME ranger fans know that and no one else who should anticipate this don’t?

Kreider looked like the Enigma last night he is famous for. It appears they decided there is no need to play defense. But they are on track for 114 pts. I can’t believe I’m saying this but Chytil is the the best player on the 3rd line.

Is it crazy to think the boys were a little off after management lets go hard working, fairly competent kid and keeps the one “with potential”* who doesn’t seem the hardest worker and has a history of whining?

KHLsov best work his butt off the second he hits the ice in a real game.

Exactly my point and ORF said it as well. They’re not as good as they think they are. Instead of looking at the success they had in the playoffs they need to realize how ineffective they were in the last 4 losses to the bolts. They are not good enough to glide through the Metro if Igor isn’t lights out. They have to out work the opposite with a ruthless tenacity.

I honestly think they came out fine, not great, but got worse as the game went along. Terrible third period for a team that’s been pretty good in them for most of the past 12 months.

  20. Gravy Avatar
    Gravy

They still got a point and were a post and/or crossbar away from winning in regulation. Also, the second goal Shesty usually stops, and he got controller drift on the OT winner. Anyway, if they have to look back in 5 months and worry about this lost point, that means there’s bigger problems.

  21. bobbyo2019 Avatar
    bobbyo2019

see your point Pete…think they got a little goal happy ..more Dmen trying to score and less backchecking by forwards. Still a young team but a game like last night may be good for them to fix things defensively

We all don’t expect the rangers to have the same lineup for 82 games. Even if there weren’t going to be injuries (most likely there will be some at sone point) they need to rotate sone guys. Moving hunt made that easier since he most likely would have been one more hurdle for someone else to clear.

You’d expect to see vital vitali at some point over the next few games for reaves or vesey in the lineup if he’s healthy.

Some good points made about yesterday being only 1 game. Beside’s opening night our boys have not played a full 60 minutes game. I am sure it’s driving GG crazy. I can’t believe I am saying this, but, Chytil is starting to carry the play for his line. If they can’t afford him I hope they get a better return than they did for Buch.

  29. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

I think the thing about Chytil hasn’t changed from 5 years ago to now.

    It’s about expectations and role.

Vermont for now and the mid range future is the 2C. I personally think he’s the ideal third line centre but it’s clear the organization views him and pays him as the 2C. We all know the world is not ideal.

About 6 years ago an astute poster here said Chytil could be a 40-60 point guy in the right system and role, that has never changed.

The question for him and the rangers is can he do what is required of him as a 200’ player that plays a third line centre role winning draws, playing smart defencive hockey with physicality. The offencive talent is always there but can it be there constantly and can the other parts needed be there consistently as well.

The second half of that is always the cap. At what point does his production and consistency (or lack there of) on the ice get to a point where it doesn’t match the cap hit.

It’s way past a “potential” thing with him and with a new contract due after the season… he’s not only at a on ice crossroads imo but a cap hit one as well this season.

There are a few more important players (imho) than him due new deals in the next season or two and can his on ice contributions be replaced by someone else that will make less (depending on his next deal $$$$) to allow $$$$ to go to more organizational important players?

Interesting situation that doesn’t just apply to Chytil but a couple other young forwards as well even if the cap goes up more than the original $1 that was initially expected for next season.

    In drury we trust.

The thing with Chytil goes beyond Chytil. It’s about the team and the roster design.
This team needs a checking line for defensive purposes. Idk why anyone would think differently at this point.
It’s not about checks and face washes or staged fights. It’s about improving things from a defensive stand point.

Hard to see Chytil filling that roll. Hard to imagine they’ll be trading Zibanejad or Trocheck to keep Chytil.

My guess is that nothing will change just like always.

Wicky I kind of agree about Vinny T as a 3C. One thing I left out of my last post is that we could in theory see a flip before long..but like you said if Trocheck is being paid to be a 2C and can put up 60-70 points in that role then he’s here to be in that role.

Finally watched the third period this afternoon. In addition to poor team D the top 4 D made some awful individual plays. Trouba had a couple of guys not named McDavid blow right by him and Foxy wasn’t that great either. The 2 D making $17.5 MM have to be better than that. They also missed the net with 21 shots. Maybe they need some new contacts. Let’s see what the early start does on Sunday.

All in the eye of the beholder I guess, Bobby.
They didn’t score because Tampa was able to smother them enough in the defensive zone . Rangers couldn’t do the same in front of Shesty. That’s how a playoff series is won.

When a team loses a game 5-2 and some fans think the problem is that they couldn’t score six goals that night there’s a disconnect.

    Good morning, Boneheads!
Yes, Wick. Probably another $4.5M after. I believe these numbers will be even higher, and the league is trying to be conservative. Earlier this year the league projected revenue for 2021-2022 was waaay above what they predicted originally. I believe they were hoping for mid to upper $4B number, but this summer the figure seemed to be around $5.2-$5.5B! The number wasn’t released yet, but by what they said about paying the escrow out two years earlier than predicted, the number may be even higher.

    FISHTICKS!!!!!

  54. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

If someone is curious as to why their projections were way below of what the league actually made, this is what happened. They had a big bump in revenue by switching to TNT and ESPN, and that number was easy to project. But what they didn’t anticipate to happen is that by switching to those platforms they attracted much more viewers, and more importantly, much more new sponsors. That new sponsorship is what bumped the revenue significantly. The new sponsors included health care systems, banks, the exponentially increasing new sports gambling sites, beer companies etc.
What I smell is that the league is planning to bump their numbers substantially again in the very near future. While this could be good news for many teams, including ours, I’m afraid we will start seeing much more than just familiar letters on our boys’ jerseys. Ugh…

Whether he’s traded or waived, whether he shows something or not in the next game or two, the Rangers should move on from VK. It’s only a question of how much (if anything), you can get for him. He doesn’t fit here. Can’t do this all year on a team that is trying to win a cup. Other gm’s see what’s happening. This is a showcase. It should be a short one.

Bobby, special teams don’t always get it done in the post season. I’d argue that allowing a goal in the final minutes of a playoff game as they did against Tampa as well as Carolina is a bigger issue.
