Rangers-3, Kings-2 (SO)

Published by

Good morning, Boneheads!

Gutsy team win. I know Shesterkin faced more shots than Quick, but I think Quick had to make much more difficult saves. Quick can also be a little dramatic. But I think it it wasn’t for him, this one wouldn’t be that close.

So, it looks like Panarin is getting back to where we want him to be. He was determined on many plays, including the game tying goal by Goodrow.

I keep repeating the same thing every time- two second rounders for Fox? And he was a third round selection? Geez..

Jacob Trouba has been their best overall D-man lately. Hard to even say that while they have Fox, but Trouba is an intimidating force on the backline, both defensively and in the O-zone at the moment. Again, this is what every team needs in the postseason to succeed.

I liked how Lafreniere responded to a potential drama in the SO. Under pressure to score or lose the game, right after Byfield, who was selected after him and scored a pretty goal. A lot of pressure. He looked cool and composed. And his goal was even more impressive.

Lastly, I was watching Quick last night, and it was painfully similar to what he did to our boys in 2014. Bad memories…Except I wonder what would have happened if they had Shesterkin playing against him…We will never know.

I hope that huge shootout goal gives Lafreniere some boost in confidence. Great call by Turk to put Lafreniere in that spot, and great on Lafreniere to make the most of it.

Can’t believe I’m talking about the Bettman Skills Competition here, but that was a good one.

I said it last night and I’ll say it again, whether one feels Lemieux’s hit on Lindgren was worthy of a game misconduct or not, the fact that it was Lemieux who was the perpetrator means everything.

“Reputation call”? You betcha. And Lemieux needs to be thrown out right then and there rather than let the Rangers take it in their own hands, which would’ve probably detracted from what became a great classic hockey game.

This rumor about Chychrun isn’t going away, it seems. I can’t understand why they want to do it. Too many holes elsewhere…

  6. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

    Ilb,
Not saying I want him, or don’t, but he slides right in to the top 4. Gives them someone for PP 2, and the PK. Has term, and a reasonable contract.

  7. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

And maybe you get Kessel in the deal.

  8. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

I understand that, BDL. Except they have more glaring needs in the middle and R wing. Reasonable contract, but still close to $5M per.

  9. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

The problem, and it’s been a problem for years now, is what do they do about 2C? Does Chychrun mean no Strome? If so, that means a stop gap would be incoming. And a young center would have to be incoming. Lots of moving parts.

  10. bobbyo2019 Avatar

Nah, bobbyo2019. He was a great Ranger. A legend, no doubt. But he was outplayed by Quick that year. He wasn’t their main problem, but if he made a few more unbelievable saves, like Quick did, you never know.

A big point of convo since 2014 for sure. I am squarely in the camp they win that series if calmbot plays over hank, but shesty is a fun “what if”…and I agree they win with him too.

Oh well, we’ll never know lol but fun to muse.

Only got to see the first half of the 1st period and had to go coach my son’s practice.

I want Ben Chiarot. I know he and Trouba played in Winnepeg at the same time. Anyone know if they were paired to together?

Yes, he’s a pure rental, but maybe Robertson has time to mature and gets brought up next year?

  17. bobbyo2019 Avatar
    bobbyo2019

Chiarot is gonna take a 1st rounder most likely and they may need that to secure top 6 RW instead unless they try to plug in more depth forwards for bottom 6

  18. ilb2001 Avatar
    ilb2001

Honestly, I’d like someone who saw Chychrun play more than I did to chime in. Is he a good fit with Trouba long term?

  19. Bdl Avatar

I’m not that guy ilb. I watched him close the other night. Thought he was solid, but have not really seen him much in his career to have a strong opinion on him.

If it were me running the team, I’d rent Kessel and Giordano.

  21. Wicky Avatar

    Ilb
He’s ok. I’m not the biggest fan of him as a Trouba partner but he’s an upgrade over the current guy. He gets decent points, not a hitter for the most part, don’t think he plays a lot of pk.

His career +/- isn’t great but I think that has a lot to do with this season (even though I don’t like that stat very much).

  22. Old Ranger Fan Avatar
    Old Ranger Fan

They don’t have that much flexibility to make moves except for rentals. Going after another D seems redundant and doesn’t address their most glaring problems. They also need a RW who can grind and play the wall. I don’t see Kessel doing that. Pavelski as a rental makes some sense, but, it will cost their fist and maybe a prospect just like Zucc cost the Stars their first. Let’s wait until closer to the deadline to make a call on whether they have a real shot and it worth trading assets away to chase it.

  23. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

    Roope Hintz…that is all.

  24. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

If they’re going d, I would like to see them get a player that takes some pk load off of fox. It might be Schneider later in the season, but as I mentioned at the start of the year…I think fox needs his minutes cut back and the pk is the logical place to do it.

  25. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

I do think chariot is a solid add. Nemeth may be an in house solution with Trouba, but ideally I’d rather see a guy that is a bit more overtly physical paired with Trouba as well as with a medium tenure.

Not sure how I feel about Kessel. He’d add some potential offence but I feel like he isn’t the type of wing that is lacking in the top 6. He’d be absolutely great in the top 9 if they had a third centre.

I have been unable to watch the games live for a while some family medical issues nothing serious. So I’ve been struggling to stay awake and watch the On Demand replay espn+. The kings definitely give the Rangers fits with their trap and pressure forecheck. They obviously know what’s going on they just don’t seem to have the personnel that wants to beat it. It easy to see the skill of Lafreniere on that shoot out goal. Hopefully it will show up more often during games.

Quick look’s pretty good for a 36 year old goalie. Agree about 2014 playoffs. He was a difference maker. Plus if Nash would have scored two or three goals and the same from Kreider;things would have been different. Just have to remember;the Kings were a better team then the Rangers. Well at least us old guys have 1994. I guess it will have to last a lifetime.

Here’s a fun fact I thought about last night.

In 2014, Fox was what? 16 years old? He and his family watching Quick out play Hank in the Cup final and beating them in 5.
Obviously it doesn’t cross his mind before the shootout but man once he gets that puck past Quick…could you imagine how good that would feel as a scorned fan?
my guess is Foxy went to bed with a smile on his face last night.

I mentioned the other day, recent history is that pure rental D men aren’t going for 1st rounders. It’s generally been 2nd with maybe another lower pick or prospect. Forwards have been going for 1sts, so it’s possible for them to add a JT and a Chiarot.

Chychrun would be different because he’s signed, as even Skjei net a first round pick.

When you score 10 goals in a 5 game series there are no standouts, save for 3rd line and McD.

Top 6 centers Richards and Step were a combined 0-3-3 (-7). Nash was 0-0-0 (-3). The Marty party never got started either. Girardi and Staal were particularly bad. 0-0-0 (-5)

Yet if they pull out game 2 when they had leads of 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2, ya never know.

It’s been said here before but I’ll echo it.

The guy I would overpay to go get is gourde at 50% retained.

I think he has 4 yrs left on his deal at 5.25per. Gourde for 4yrs at 2.65m.

For the cap hit, for the term, for the need and quality of player.

That’s the sort of situation I would try to approach Francis with a deal that would be extremely hard to pass up.

  85. Beezle Avatar
    Beezle

If we are going to go into the realm of the unlikely and overpays, go get Cirelli from TB.

  86. Jpp2.0 Avatar
    Jpp2.0

I think gourde lifts our entire forward lines and the amount of offensive zone possession incredibly.

He turns our 3rd line into a strength for the next 4 years if we got him.

For a couple seasons you could conceivably run Tampa’s 3rd line on their back to backs with laffy in Coleman’s spot.

    Laffy/gourde/goodrow

Gourde’s not the sexiest play, but it might be the most valuable play they could make.

  87. Jpp2.0 Avatar
    Jpp2.0

What’s gourde gonna do for Francis in his lineup?

Give him a good hard honest shift every 3rd shift for 18 mins a game while they lose for another 2 seasons and then he’s a year removed from UFA and wants to be moved to a playoff team as a rental.

Gourdes value to that franchise is moving him and infusing some talent and guys who can grow with the team.

Regarding Chychrun, think there are other teams that will have better packages and/or the position they play the yutes are looking for and one of those teams is the Panthers. And no thanks on Chychrun. He’s a luxury we can’t afford and it would be a case of poor asset management. Also, as much as I want JT Miller, and I do… it would likely take a big overpay to land him.

  92. cregg7 Avatar

From wheelers athletic article reshuffling their tiers from Oct to now

“ Jakob Chychrun, D, Arizona: After a fantastic 2020-21, Chychrun’s star has fallen sharply. He still plays a lot of minutes for Arizona, but his all-around play has taken a step back as the talent around him disappeared. He’s still a good player, but it’s clear he needs help to carry a top pair, which makes it hard to justify his inclusion on this list altogether. We call this the “Provorov Principle.”

Chychrun has been that bad this season, but he will likely fare fine if he’s traded to an environment where he’s not the go-to guy — and just a big, highly mobile defenseman who can move and shoot the puck. We got ahead of ourselves tabbing him as one of the top defensemen in the league.”

  93. St Pete Eli Avatar

Does Francis believe Gourde will be relevant when and if the Kracken ever become contenders? I doubt it. IMO anyone except a choice few can be had for the right mix in a hockey trade.

Lots of rumours about some players and the rangers and I’m sure it’ll increase because everyone knows they don’t have to be $$$$ in $$$$ deals because the rangers have space this season as well as assets.

Exactly my thought as well on both parts. A d for a centre both young. You can add valardi from a position of asset strength and if he isn’t an immediate impact it’s fine because he’s a medium/long term roster add.

You can still get your rental centre and winger for the now as well.

Valardi (or a similar you centre) doesn’t hurt your cap and fills that Chytil spot more effectively and then gives you 3 top 9 centres (speculating strome is kept in the scenario).

  115. Wicky Avatar
    Wicky

To me, any centre they add I’d like to see an above 50% faceoff wins. I don’t care if it’s a glendening type rental or a medium/long term guy. I don’t think roslovic is very good on draws (if the intent was to play him at the Chytil spot. Fwiw, not sure what vilardi’s is either.

Drury obviously has a bunch of different irons in the fire. Doesn’t mean they’re acquiring 6 different guys.
Just like the acquisition of a contract doesn’t necessarily mean the end of Strome. This blog is infamous for assumptions in addition to witty banter and high quality debate.

    James,
A ton of cap space currently. I would go heavy in the rental market. Leave next year alone. But, if the right center, with term became available, I think you have to go get him. If that happens, that is most definitely the end of Strome.

  141. Bdl Avatar
    Bdl

Drury has a lot of work in front of him. Both for this year, and going forward. Needs to address the center position. Need a top 9 forward. A depth, or better Dman.plays Georgiev. He has all this, and Gilda to frame for it.

Agree w BDL, the Cap Crunch next season points to loading up on vet rentals and making a run this season.
A banger 2way top 6 RW, a vet LD to play with Tuba and a defensively focused 3C to match up against the other teams top line. Also another big banger to pair with Reavo on 4th line.

They are very top heavy now in production which is not going to change given cap constraints at trade deadline but moving on from Flip and getting Miller off of top 4 D is addition by subtraction come PO time.

Odd schedule for all teams this year but the Rangers have a bizarre series of back-to-back games when the second game is against a team well-rested. Within that set several times the Rangers in fact had to travel the night prior …while the other team rests and waits.
The most recent was the Jan 21/22 back-to-back @Carolina then NYR host AZ
(Trouba mentioned in one story he got home at 4am.)
December 8th @ Avs (rested) NYR @ Chicago night before
December 14th hosted AZ (rested) NYR @ Avs the night before
January 3rd host Edm (rested) NYR hosted TB the night before
January 28th host Minn (rested) NYR @ CBJ the night before
March 30th @ Detroit (rested) NYR @ Pitt the night before
April 12th Host Carolina then NYR @ Phil (in this case they do play the night before)
They’ve done just fine so far – but it’s an odd…seemingly unfair pattern.
    Onward!

Yes, Larry. I think you’re the only one. The newspaper (or is it the clicks? ) needs to be sold somehow. Or is it an attempt to lure us into getting a Sports+? Lafreniere stays in NY.

GG on Schneider – thank you JD. OTB Gorton prolly had his eyes set on an undersized RD with offensive upside. In a related story Nils has hired a realtor in Hartford.

“He’s going to be a Trouba; he’s a mini-Trouba right now,” Gallant said of the 20-year-old Schneider, who has played six games since his promotion two weeks ago. “That’s what the kid’s going to be.

“I like him a lot. He’s a young kid, getting better every game, plays a physical brand, has some skill. There’s a combination of a lot of good things there. He goes out there and makes very few mistakes.”

Inquiries are one thing and harmless. Gms doing due diligence etc…willing to deal him is a whole other story.

I’ll say this though, Brooks is correct re finding guys via free agency as strome replacements…vet guys like Giroux, James’ boy trochek, and hertl I’m sure will come in at a higher annual than strome. If strome isn’t returning , they either need to get a young guy that’s already under contract or up for a bridge that they hope/think can fill the strome role going forward or do the miller deal (or one like it) where a guy has that magical $6 mil per or under for another year or two and find a longer term guy after that.
