Good morning, boneheads!
Congratulations to Mika Zibanejad on winning the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award! Well deserved, he’s been their best player this year, by a mile.
According to multiple sources, Glen Sather is going to retire as a president of the Rangers at the end of this season. Remains to be seen whether it has an impact on the rest of this team’s hierarchy, if any.
First time this season I could not wait for this game to be over. Admittedly, I had a very long and tiring day at work yesterday. But I don’t think this was the reason. They just came out flat and never gained any traction. How many special night games have they won lately? I’m too lazy to look it up, but I remember getting upset about it last season too. Ugh…
I’m very glad I don’t have to write a review of this snooze-fest. But Carp does, luckily.
Click here to read his game review.
UPDATE: Click here to read Carp’s new article about Glen Sather.

Very difficult to watch right now. Especially Hank.
Wait, wasn’t he gone already? Carp?! 🙂
Just bounce the fk outta here already, dude!

Ahem, CCCP, I posted this link above already.
This one isn’t an April Fool’s Day post, right ILB? lol. I know it’s like a Christmas morning post for Slatsko!
BDL I’ll start by saying I come in peace. But this is why I’m not on board with trading Georgiev for a sack of pecans and calling it asset management.
If I had full confidence in Hank for the final two years of his contract (which I did prior to this season) I would be on the fence, especially in light of how badly we need quality players around here. And even though it’s tricky and it’s a tough situation when Shestyorkin gets here I think they should buy their time and continue to let Georgiev gain experience and show himself to be one of the better young goalies in the league. Something has to give but I think it’s only fair to argue to that it may be Hank that needs to be the odd man out. Of course now that I’ve said that he’ll probably start next season with 3 consecutive shut outs…
Sorry, ilb. Here in prison, we have really small computer screens. 😀
C3, just fess up. Way too many attorneys around this blog for it to be believable 🙂
Yeah… so many attorneys and no one could get me outta the situation! 😛
This is my favorite part of this TSN article about Slats:
“McKenzie adds that the decision to step down would be Sather’s call and that he would remain an advisor to James Dolan, the executive chairman and CEO of MSG”
it’s like the killer in the cheesy horror movie. You can’t shake him totally. I think when Sather passes on (which hopefully won’t be for a long time) you’ll see a report that Dolan hired a medium to try to contact him for advice from the grave..
Money talks, C3!
Mark Messier, come get the President’s chair!
I thought is was an extra effort award, not the team MVP award?
.
Names would have been a better choice.
Not sure who takes over as President. Schoenfeld? Barnett? Or perhaps Gorton will take both roles.
James
Hank and future shut-outs are mutually exclusive! Oh I almost forgot. Good morning Boneheads welcome to Thursday!
Does Olga know yet? If he does, we won’t see him until he sobers up. Could be around Christmas 🙂
Drury fro President, free pizza for everyone!
Good point, SN. I think with Fast and Hank having mediocre years they gave it a big old eff it and decided on Zibby. Not easy to score 70 points, scratch sick beats and highlight one’s hair in a single season..
https://i.gifer.com/1rty.gif
LOL today IS Christmas in the Folkyerself household, ILB!
I don’t think Olga will be happy till Sather kicks the bucket.
Think about it 72 points on this team.
Olga is getting the interview suit pressed and shirt starched right this moment. Dolan reads the blog so unless something really bad happens or the background check turns up a real life association with CCCP, Olga is the next pres!
My guess is Gorton will be promoted to president and Drury will be made the GM.
James – I thought the award was to recognize the players effort not skill. I guess once they started to hand it out to Zucc, all bets were off. To me, it shows the dumbing down of the NYR fan base.
I cannot wait for these games to end so I don’t have to watch Mr
Pink play hockey for 6 months, hopefully forever.
Figure if they are getting Fox, both Bev and Pink are goners, unless they are planning to have 4 offensive Dmen playing on the backline. For that matter, might as well sign Carl’s Son.
SN
I seriously doubt one punch Tony is going anywhere?
A lot will depend on what happens with Staal and Ensign Kirk. It seems to me that teams don’t give kids big minutes to toss them on the scrap heap (Pionk 99 games, 21:12 TOI, D’Anger 131 games, 19:17 TOI) Anyone is movable but I’d think a move, were it to happen, more likely at the next trade deadline.
James,
I have NEVER said, give away Georgiev for nothing. What I have said, and I stand by it today, is if Georgiev has value, and he clearly does, they should explore it. Here is a scenario for you. Buffalo get the two spot. The Rangers fall between 4/6. Buffalo says you can come up to two for swap of firsts, and Georgiev. Would you do it?
Bdl
Yes.
I’d really do it if they’d take hank instead 😉
Wicky,
You say yes because you are a rational, forward thinking fan. Others are scared to death to make any kind of trade because heaven forbid, the trade may not work out for the Rangers.
100%, BDL. It’s more that I just don’t think that a Cam Talbot type deal would be appropriate in this case given where the organization is at and Hank’s status
On the bright side, The Hockey News came out with their annual Future Watch issue and they gave the Rangers a B+ grade and rate them as having the 11th best prospects (with their top four being ranked within the Top 62). There were a few teams with a B+ so I am not sure how they differentiated the teams (I haven’t read the whole issue yet). Just three years ago, THN had the Rangers rated with the 30th best prospects.
The Top 10 is as follows:
1. Vitali Kravtsov (rated as the #5 overall prospect)
2. Lias Andersson
3. Igor Shestyorkin
4. K’Andre Miller
5. Linor Hajek
6. Nils Lundkvist
7. Adam Huska
8. Ryan Lindgren
9. Morgan Barron
10. Joey Keane
And I resent that comment about being “scared” I’m always rational. I just think that this organization should put a bit more consideration into certain moves it makes/doesn’t make.
I’m not scared. You’re scared. Scaredy cat!
Anthony I think Lias ahead of K’Andre is a stretch but I like that list.
Agree on “dumbing down” of Rangers fans, SN. The older ones are getting exceptionally ornery as the years go on as well..
James the Talbot trade was what it was because they waited to long to make the move. They waited till they had no choice. Be proactive, not reactive.
bite me. Is that too reactive? lol
Guys I’m far from onery.
Wonder if they’d bring back Don Maloney?
eli – happy wife, happy life?
James – Not my list so you can’t blame me 🙂
Tomk19 – I remember hearing Maloney’s name kicked around as a President somewhere else. It might have beet Ottawa, but I think it was somewhere else because the story I read was why Maloney might not be available for Ottawa.
BDL, that’s a mouthful coming from a guy that wanted to trade Zibanejad 3 months ago. There is such a thing as undervaluing a player. I’m not sure why you’re being so stubborn about the goalie situation. You’re a Giants fan just like I am – what happens when you build a team without a reliable QB? The rest doesn’t matter all that much, right? Same with hockey. If you make a bad move- proactive or forward thinking as it may have initially been- you wind up setting your franchise back.
Now look, You and I have no idea what will happen with Shestyorkin OR Georgiev any more than we know what the powerball numbers are going to be tomorrow night. I was making a case for not trading him unless there was a no brainer deal such as the scenario you presented earlier.
I don’t think that I’m out of line in any way to say that given the current status of our aging franchise goalie maybe – just MAYBE- they shouldn’t rush to a decision about which goalies are expendable before the fog lifts a bit more on the big picture.
So, if you want to call that being reactive or scared or whatever other way you can insult my perspective then be my guest. At the end of the day I don’t care about which names are on the back of these jerseys as long as they’re the ones given the team the best chance to win.
I am formally announcing that I am throwing my hat into the ring for position of President of the New York Rangers. While I am unable to speak about specific players on other teams because that would be tampering, I do have an outline (that I will type up as opposed to submitting a handwritten version) of my course of action.
I would hire a couple of those analytics guys even though I am not big on that stuff – which is why I need to hire them. I would fire Gordie Clark as the Director of Player Personnel and bring in someone else to run the amateur side of the Rangers scouting. The Rangers are not getting enough bang for their buck when it comes to the Draft. The candidate would be someone from an organization that has a proven track record of drafting players who exceed their expectations.
Next up would be to hire more scouts in North America and Europe and move out some of the cronies that Sather gave jobs to (e.g. Mike Barnett). I would hire someone who will be put in charge of European Player Personnel and will be in charge of both amateur and pro scouting. I would also look into hiring scouts whose jobs would be to scout the AHL and ECHL. I want a dossier on all players so that it makes easier to assess players when it comes to trading for players or even preparing for them when they get to the NHL.
I’d bring developmental coaches to work with our prospects in Hartford, but more specifically to work with the kids in Juniors and Europe. I’d have them work with the US collegians, but I am not sure of the NCAA rules in those terms. The Rangers coaching stays except for Lindy Ruff. With all of the young d-men in the system they need a better teacher than Ruff.
In addition, I would seek to hire Gary Roberts to work on the strength and conditioning of all players under contract with the New York Rangers and also hire a full-time power skating coach to work with the players.
A whole new coaching staff at Hartford is the next step. The fact that the Wolf Pack are dreadful is partly based on roster configuration and partly based on coaching/development. I would also have Mr. Dolan purchase an ECHL team so that the Rangers can fully control any players sent to the ECHL, rather than leave it up to Paul Holmgren, Crash Briere and a team that is owned by the Flyers’ parent company. The AHL and ECHL teams would then be able to play the same style as the Rangers. There is a reason why the Devils and Lou Lamoriello were good for so long without spending money – they had a system that they taught in the AHL and played in the NHL.
The key to my administration as President of the Rangers is to remember that the NHL imposes limits in terms of cap space and number of players on the roster/under contract, but the NHL has NO limitations on front office staff, coaching/development and farm teams.
One final thing – it is time for some new announcers on MSG. Sam and Joe are out and Kenny Albert and Dave Maloney are in.
Ya think I have given this some thought?!? 🙂
SN, I scoffed at that phrase then a good friend told me on my wedding day that from that day forward I could be right or I could be happy. It’s good advice for participants of this blog too 😀
LOL, Anthony I just copied and pasted that post and emailed it to MSG.
ps- I know you didn’t write that list. :p
As far as Talbot goes I think they stubbornly held out for a 1st rounder that wasn’t coming given the age and contract status. Hasn’t looked like much of a mistake to have traded him or Raanta so it is what it is at this point.
No way should Georgie be traded. Hank is done being anything near a productive netminder. Due to the anchor contract wrapped around the King’s (more like court jester at this point) neck, keep him as a backup and let him play 20 games next year. Georgie is young and can handle 60 + games. If it turns out Georgie isn’t the guy (I think he is) then the NYR are in the same boat as having Hank as #1 given his suckatude
I value Georgiev just fine, thank you.
As far as Zibanejad goes, nothing that has happened this year has changed my view on him. I think he a tease. You don’t build teams around guys like him. Had a very good season, no arguing that. But thats what teases do. They have random big seasons. Fool fans and management into thinking, hey look at this guys potential! It buys the player another two seasons of good grace, because, look what he did two seasons ago, he can do that again. But teases always fall back to the fact that they are teases. Usually teams figure it out to late.
I wouldn’t touch Trump’s job, but I wouldn’t mind Slats’s job lol
Keep things humming along. These guys are doing a good job now that they’ve been it over.
If and when there is a next president it should be JD
I personally think Mika can do this every year and even get better. But it’s not lost on me that this season coincided with the window the rangers had to trade him before the NMC kicked in. He wanted to make sure the rangers didn’t trade him before his NMC kicked in, and now he has set the bar for himself though
If they trade Georgie, I’m going with him 🙂
*turned it over.
Not been it over
Hang on BDL, Let me get a pen so I can make a list of roster needs….
1. A better 70+ point scorer as 1C than the one we have
2. Fewer 23 year old goalies who show flashes of dominance on terribly defensive teams
3. Demotion of rookies that don’t pass your eye test (actually agree with that one)
……did I leave any important ones out?
EDITOR’S NOTE: This list is meant to be humorous but at the end of the day I’m just a scared, irrational fan that can’t think forward and overestimates what we have.
You might as well, jpp. Fans around here probably undervalue you as well 🙂
Let me help you with that list.
A consistent 70pt scoring center.
A goaltender who’s value may be worth more to the team on the trade market.
Better handling of the teams prospects. Let them be over ripe when they get here.
James
Who’s is this guy jpp?
Lol!
James,
You left out overly sensitive.
James
That’s 70 + without a true sniper on his wing.
There is, and should be no one, on this team that the Rangers would not trade – unless specifically forbidden by one of Glen’s NTC/NMC deals. I forgot to add that the full NTC/NMC will go the way of the dinosaur when I am the named the next President of the Rangers – unless your name is McDavid or unless you are willing to sign a contract FAR under your value.
As for AG40, I would trade him in a heartbeat if someone made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. If the Rangers have to start training camp with Hank, AG40 and Igor that is a problem I will gladly enjoy in this day and age where dreck is the norm in goalie in the NHL.
The problem for the Rangers is Hank has been very dreckish the last couple of months and his AAV is anything but dreckish. DQ has to limit Hank to about 40 starts next year and let the foreign contingent split the rest. You can rotate AG40 and Igor between NY and Hartford to keep them fresh and to get them playing time.
The only problem with that plan is AG40 stunk the joint up in Hartford. Granted, the Wolf Pack were a dumpster and tire fire, but Mazanec and Tokarski put up better numbers. The only goalie who fared worse is Adam Huska who just signed with organ-eye-zation.
I didn’t mean to re-open the can of worms on Zika. Fact of the matter is I didn’t love his play for long stretches this year either. But I’ve also been one of the only guys to stick to my guns about giving him a chance to show what he’s got when healthy enough to get through a full season.
There’s this assumption that it’s about him putting up the numbers he’s put up this year but it’s not that black and white.
’15-16: 21 goals 51 points in 80
’16-17: broken leg; 37 in 56
’17-18: 27 goals 47 points in 72
’18-19: 30 goals 72 points in 80 on a bad team with a bunch of different linemates
That’s an upward trend in a young player who has been given more responsibility each year. Plus he throws the body even though you’ll never mistake him for Jamie Benn. Doesn’t mean he’s going to score 70 every year or hit 90 next season. But if you can’t see the positive then IDK what to tell you.
Hank is still sour and butt hurt about zucc. It’s affecting his play.
And no one on this team should be untradeable…in the right deal.
Anthony, good stuff. It seems as though good players struggling in Hartford this season was a bit of a trend though. I don’t know how heavily to weigh that against guys that seem to be able to get it done with the big club. Georgiev’s gaa hasn’t been anything to write home about but the save% is there. I should reiterate that I would certainly be ok with moving a player off this roster in the right kind of deal. Just wouldn’t be in a rush to swap him for the sake of making room.
Wick, I’m scared. but I agree.
If hank is sour and butt hurt about anything, it should be him not making the saves when they counted against the kings and getting outplayed by quick.
Sorry, scared and overly sensitive lol
😉
user name BDL may secretly be my wife trolling RR2. LOL
Random good year.
It’s all in good fun. This season has been awful. Plus the Giants may trade for Josh Rosen. I’m going to need meds.
You looking to buy tires, BDL? Try Michelin. They tend to wear better
I wonder if Flyers fans feel this way about Couturier. Or if Avs fans think they should trade McKinnon before he turns back into a pumpkin….
The Giants did not like Rosen last year. Do they like him now. They are taking Lock, or Jones at 17.
They don’t seem to be willing to part with more than a second rounder for him but that may be enough to get him. Not sure why they wouldn’t have had a conversation with AZ about Odell + for the 1st pick Kyle Murray is much better QB
I’m not a Murray guy. But I think that’s a style preference. I like the guys who can stand in the pocket and deliver.
Kyle Murray; little people, big city
ZibIstanbul cops Award! Even a Cave Man can do it.
so nice i said it twice
Sam Rosen will be the Gmen QB?
Dolan to Slats just before retirement announcement: “How many more gdamned years am I going to pay you large to play golf?”
someone mentioned JD for President over on Athletic…interesting choice and it would be easy sell …plus he may be looking to get out of Columbus if they don’t make playoffs
JD hasn’t done much better in Columbus than Sather in NY. And he had a few curious signings, trades, and choices of players in the expansion draft.
Players exposed and protected, I meant to say.
JD, the guy with all those playoff round wins in STL, and CBJ? That JD?
Exactly, BDL
just throwing it out there boys… Messier has no experience …Drury is the Hartford GM so not sure about his track record
“have another doughnut” for president!!
BDL, with you there but the word on Rosen was that he’s a bit of a head case. I guess that doesn’t matter when the franchise qb of the last decade has an IQ of 95 😂😂
Love to see Zika’s stats at Even Strength away from Kreider the past 2 seasons.
.
I know, I know Kreider stinks because he doesn’t score enough goals. He needs to get in in the forecheck, possess the puck and then score the goals. How many other players you see able to do that?
I’ll wait…
Hard pass on jd. If he wants to go back in the booth, then I’m all for it, as the team president…no thanks.
Truthfully, what kind of experience would the President of the Rangers need? Exactly what will be the job description? If it is a ceremonial position where the biggest responsibility is sitting on the Board of Directors, then experience wouldn’t be needed.
If you are asking that person to set the agenda for the organization, then you might want experience depending on your GM.
I could see Gorton getting both jobs with Drury receiving more responsibility to handle some of the day-to-day jobs of a GM. Gorton is probably too young to go upstairs just to be President and then turn the team over to Drury as the GM.
I think the Rangers need to go “off the board” with the naming of the new President. No, not Gordie Clark. They should hire Henrik Lundqvist. Think about it, Hank retires and then moves upstairs to be President at his player’s salary and all of our problems are solved.
We save his $8.5 million cap hit and Hank still gets his money and can show up at the Garden to show off his wonderful coif. Everyone wins!
Anthony
Everyone wins except the team the rangers are playing because swissqvist isn’t in net.
Is it wrong for me to hope that Columbus fails after going all-in, and thereby makes John Davidson available to be NYR President?
Hank’s first move as President: re-signing Zucc to a multi-year/multi-million dollar NMC contract.
It’s too early in Gorton’s tenure to bring a new president and let him change the course. What if this new guy decides to bring a new GM? I don’t think Sather is stepping down to let that happen.
Exactly. It’s all moot. Who’s kidding who slats stuck around long enough into the rebuild to ensure Gorts got his full run. They aren’t gonna bring in a president that takes Gorts out of the seat right now. He’s got 2 years with a heat proof seat, maybe a year and 3/4s
So this is not to get a couple certain posters here panties in a bunch, this is just a post about a few interviews over the last couple of days I heard on rds and tsn.
With the rangers and sens playing there has been a lot of chatter about the rangers from the Capitol.
There were three separate interviews on rds with I’d call “regional” guys about the rangers…one said it was a rebuild, one said it was a restock of the system, the other called it a retool.
I was laughing because I was thinking they must have interviewed 3 posters from here.
The more interesting stuff came from three “national” guys (well 1 national insider and 2 national tv guys)
Kenny Albert said in an interview the organization isn’t viewing this as a rebuild at all, but trying to add a few blocks to the foundation.
Pierre McGuire (everyone’s fave) said it’s a rebuild, but not a conventional long one.
Bob McKenzie said it was a rebuild in name only and isn’t one at all. The rangers are moving guys to get assets with expiring contracts and will be heavy into dealing and free agency to move back into contention with stockpiled assets. Not going to be anything close to a 5 year situation either.
Dun dun dun
Or
Is
It
Woop woop waaa
The Rangers called up Lindgren. I don’t understand why he was not up instead of Gilmour to begin with. My guess is we have now seen the last of Gilmour.
Fact is……nobody outside the club knows. Maybe Gorton does not completely know, as it depends what deals there are available in free agents and trades. Up to today, the best predictor of what they would be doing has been Carp. He called the McDonagh, Hayes and. Zucc moves right on when others were all over the board. In fact, he was about right on the last 2 deadlines. The Rangers will never admit to a rebuild and, given that they refuse to tank, that seems accurate. Being Capt. Obvious here, it depends on their draft choices and young prospects ability and development. The jury is out on mist as of now.
Bdl
Yep, great point re gilmour. Guy is not an nhl player.
If you want a good laugh go back and check out some of the threads from last season about gilmour from some of the posters here…it’s pure gold.
Tym
Thing is, if last years free agent crop had the potential this one does, some fans would really be inconsolable because gorton and the rangers would have been all over it last season.
It’s definitely enjoyable though.
I would bring in a while new regime; that this one got another kick at the cab is ludicrous.
Cab = can
SN
While=whole?
Lol
😜
If sather did actually leave, I’d love to see Burke as president.
Of course, I originally wanted av here as coach and realized after about a season I was wrong there, so maybe I should stick to player evaluation lol.
SN,
I disagree about a new regime. I happen to think Gorton has done a heck of a job replenishing the prospect pool. It takes time for them to get here, but when they do, the NHL and AHL team will be better. He has put them in position to strike this off season. Whether it be in the FA market, or trade market. Watching the NHL team right now is very difficult, but this is what fans asked for, a rebuild. And this is what a rebuild looks like.
Please no Burke! For the love of God no Burke! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! No Burke!
Wouldn’t mind someone who doesn’t mind having Canadien players on the team. This soft team is a collection of college boys and eurotrash.
I’ve got a bird here that needs to go into concusion protocol. Been flying into the dining room window since 8 am. Going to name him Lindros
BDL – to sign with that thinking presumes Gorton has zero say in what happened as Asst GM and absolves him of the ill fated moves over his actual tenure. Anyone can trade away players and draft up and comers and finish in bottom of division for 2 seasons.
The heavy lifting will be In this offseason when he has to show his hand on whether a retool or rebuild or just a total clusterfugg.
At what point does he have accountability for the state of the franchise??
yea Mika needs to show he can do it again and then that he can perform in the playoffs. Let us not forget another center who also wore #93 put up 68 and 78 for us on some bad teams and don’t think anyone thought he was s guy to build around either. Maybe Mika really has turned a corner and he can repeat and build on this year, time will tell. Also make a case his trade value will never be higher but then they truly are going full nuclear rebuild if they moved him.
If any team was dumb enough to trade 2nd overall pick for Georgie and our 1st, we should do so immediately…..just can’t see that ever happening.
James, Buffalo traded a 1st for Lehrer and a vet that same year. Gorton essentially said they waited too long and when they went back to teams their offers changed, so my guess is they had a 1st at one point for Talbot and blew it.
Finally, Gorton has a lot of work to do if Lias is truly our 2nd best prospect (but agree he should be below Miller right now).
Bdl
Built Calgary to where they are, Toronto has a lot of players he had a hand in getting, moved up to draft both sedins, cup with ducks… I’m ok with him.
SN,
Agree that this is a very big summer coming up. Definitely the pivotal one in this rebuild/ retool/reset. This summer is what he has been positioning them for. There cannot be anymore selloffs. If they trade Kreider, it needs to be part of a hockey trade. Everything they do this summer needs to be about winning a lot more games next year. NO MORE TANKING!
I also agree that they have gotten a little to European, and maybe even a little to American.
Who said KHL wasn’t a tough league?!
SN
Kreider brings a suitcase full of tools to the ice every night I’m aware of that, however sniper isn’t in the luggage!
Michael Ferland anyone?
Here’s Craigweather after Sather’s announcement:
https://twitter.com/barstoolnewsn/status/1113846742045405184
LMAO FatGuy.
Good ol’ Nick. Very entertaining guy…. Always has been.
From the New York Rangers:
OFFICIAL: #NYR President Glen Sather is **transitioning** from his current role to become Senior Advisor to the owner and **alternate governor.**
The organization will begin an immediate search for a new President, with Jeff Gorton continuing in his current role as the team’s GM.
Transitioning to alternate governor?! Did Sather come up with that himself?
I’ve always thought Sather was an interesting dude. The resume and career and relationships speak for themselves. Now I saw these guys when they were older and on other teams, but I saw the repeat penguins and the wings, avalanche, and devils, but it always amazed me as a kid that Sather found all those guys: the coffeys and Kurris and Andersens and Fuhrs on top of gretz and mess.
Guy deserves to be remembered for his storied Edmonton chapter, one of the greatest in the history of the NHL and hockey.
On top of it, I think come 2010 he was a guy just as passionate about trying to win a cup for the fan base and the history of the organization and I think was it 75/25 in service to the fan base and team itself, to him desiring it for his own ego reasons.
So Mazel tov old maverick. You got a lundqvist mission of your own. Devise and live a regimen that lets you have another good chunky chapter
Cheers Slat
I don’t think there is anyone in the organization I would want to be team president.
It’s official! Let’s start searching for Olga in local ERs. Call and ask if there is anyone who’s dead drunk, can’t stop laughing in joy, and keeps repeating:”He’s gone, he’s gone, he’s gone…”
He’s not completely gone, yet. Olga will still blame him.
Fuhr GGA 3.38 SV% .887
That is not a good goalie career stats lol
The JD whispers have started. That would be a safe and popular choice. It would not be popular with me, but for most it would be.
Alternate governor? Is that like an alternate captain? Does Sather get a big A on the left side of his suit jacket to wear to owner’s meetings?
Dave Maloney and Carp certainly call it a rebuild. Just a rebuild (not a 5 year rebuild or anything like that)
re Talbot. Wasn’t there talk that 1’s were available but toxic contracts had to come our way. Example Hayes brother.
So Sather is like Fuhr… he just happened to be on a very good team… in Edmonton.
Lotta stink eye re: JD. Are we under the impression that the new president will deter Gorton from doing what he thinks is best for the team? Or do we want to fire Gorton?
I can never keep up.
Sather is transitioning his role but his cigar is still signed on for 13 more years.
Re: Mika proving himself in the post season- pretty sure he scored the biggest goal of the team’s playoff run in the only year he’s been here since they qualified.
Sather becoming a transvestite?
Advisor? Alternate Governor? So he’s still there. not gone.
FIRE SATHER COMPLETELY!
Not good enough.
So basically we do t know who the next president of the team is we just know we dont like him!
Fishing all day. Just caught up. Beer me! That old folker is still around, stinking up the joint. A new Prez is a start though. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a start…
Biden for Ranger Prez. He’s already smelling Gorton’s hair from behind.
A few guys with Ranger connections I’d bring in for interviews:
Brian Leetch (would he be interested?)
Colin Campell
John Davidson
Don Maloney
Obviously, there doesn’t need to be a Rangers connection, but I’d speak with those guys among others.
What’s Yzerman up to these days?
Brooksie used the vape pen pic. That’s great
Sorry tom i’d pass on all four unless Leetch was being hired as a figure head only. Don did not do a good job at the end of his time here and hard to say he did well in Phoenix either, JD hasn’t done a good job in Columbus and Colin is just awful in all regards.
Interesting position in general as they can be very hands off running the team or be more active in the GM’s decisions, which I imagine would get awkward fast if the latter turned out to be the authority given to the new hire. Maybe now Gorton can clear any remaining Sather holdovers….like Clarke and Staal please?
I vote Yzerman
I like Gorts and Drury and Clark and Bobrov and all those guys. I like what they’ve been doing. JD might be the perfect fit bc it allows things to continue as planned while bringing in JD’s eye and knowledge of hockey and his passion for the game and people. JD bleeds blue. The guy is crying looking at the Stanley cup Hat in ‘94.
JD might be perfect for the front office
Yzerman is more of a pipe dream than the rangers and Knicks Free agency dreams of landing 4 studs.
combined
Holland takes the Seattle gig after seeing how great of set-up the NHL gifted a smart guy like McPhee. New challenge, new geography. Awesome region.
Yzerman is taking over in Detroit.
Imo
Omg what the hell. Are the jets a college program now? Those are college jerseys
Mess if he wants the job for the same exact reasons.
Yzerman would not be a handsoff hire that’s for sure, but he is Detroit bound. Not to mention Yzerman made some real dumb signings of ex-Rangers (Cally and Miller) and Coburn, so who needs him! Now i’d take Tampa’s scouting department in a heart beat
Brian Elliot with a tough first period v the Blues
.
Buff winning , Detroit losing
You knew he’d get his panties in a bunch…lmao
BREAKING: Sean Avery to be named Rangers’ new President.
Sather: “enjoy my sloppy seconds, kid.”
Crazy that blues could still win division after having worst record in the league in November
just completely disagree with you Wicky
just don’t want to get into insulting war unless you think the panties thing is a compliment.
Craps look like beasts compared to Le Habs
BJs beat NYR and they are in playoffs
Caps win division
Buffalo will win tonight. they play Detroit Saturday. Both 1 pt back of us. 3 pt game would be awesome.
You’re not disagreeing with me you’re disagreeing with the guys that said it.
Carp still think Azzdancers won’t make it?
As much as I love carp, he’ll be the first one to say he isn’t correct all the time.
What exactly is an NHL team President’s job anyway? To fire the GM when the owner tells him to? What else?
College President’s job is really just to shake hands and raise money while looking like he’s working.
Right now Alex is trying to get ahold of McKenzie and Kenny Albert via social media to scold them because he completely disagrees with them.
Hilarious
Olga Slats said this goes out to you 😁
Pedro for President. If you elect him your wildest dreams willcome true.
Napoleon Dynamite for GM.
Oh man, Stepan and that beard…yeesh
Avs and Big Game Brass are in
Slats go home. Take the package. Here’s a gold watch. Retire with dignity. Just go now.
Who has been telling the world for years that Slats does nothing? Gorton?
whispers
need two losses here and chance we can fall to 4th, but worst would be 5th (which we’d also get it we get one point this weekend). of course we win both and we could finish 8th…would be a fitting end.
Really glad we beat the Leafs, Blues and Flyers last week! Not like we’d want or need the 2nd pick or anything
I love how all these Western teams that were struggling are suddenly in the playoffs. Blues, Avs, Stars all making the show. Would be stunned if the Cup winner isn’t out of the East this season.
I thought we were trading Georgiev for the 2nd overall pick? I kid. I kid!
Blues very impressive short passing team in Ozone; create scoring chances out of nothing.
West is wide open; go Stars!
.
Re Slats and his real responsibilities; seems like his primary tasks were focused on managing up and babysitting Dumbarse Dolan. That and reaching for Offensive Dmen (if you ask Gorts)
And overpaying in deadline deals! He was good at that
Good morning, boneheads!
Two games to go. BJs are playing for their playoff chances. Two points, and they’re in. With two games to go. Pittsburgh, if they lose to the Rangers tomorrow, may end up playing Washington.
We’ll do another subscription contest at 12:30 pm.
Ryan O’Reilly earned back some of my respect this season. He’ll never be my favorite player but the guy wanted out of Buffalo for a chance to compete. Didn’t make a spectacle of himself just went to St. Louis prepared for the year and set a career high in points while matching his career high in goals. Good stuff there.
Man, Torts is going to have a lot to say from the car seat today…
best pens can do is tie in points if Isles lose next game, so Pens have the tie breaker on isles Ilb?
I have not paid close attention to the lottery standings, but I’m guessing these last two are must lose games.
If the Islanders lose and Pitssburgh beats the Rangers in regulation/OT, they will have a home ice advantage. I was referring more to if Pittsburgh loses in regulation and Carolina wins in any manner, Pittsburgh will finish at the first wild card spot and will face Washington.
Apparently Carp had another article in the Athletic last night. Post above updated.
Way to drop the ball, ILB 🙂
James – O’Reilly is one of the top 3 two way pivots in the game; wish NYR was able to grab him when the Sabres were liking to deal.
McD straight up would have been worth it.
Guys, I don’t always have time to check on Carp’s article unless I know they’re coming. You can just link them if you see them.
Easy, ILB. Just a joke, sir. Great read, btw. Makes you realize that a big part of this search is going to be finding someone that doesn’t encourage Dolan to be more hands on with this organization
True, SN. and at the time I felt Buffalo would win that trade because of Tage Thompson.
And while I think Yzerman would be a great choice, I would think he’s the most likely to want to bring in his own guys. Could backfire in that lovely NY way that we’ve seen in the past..
The blues are another example of how your fortunes can change quickly, dead last in the league at the beginning of January and now fighting for top spot in their division.
This point system blows, spot giving loser points…zero points for any loss I say!!!!!!
Spot=stop…sorry folks
James, I wasn’t referring to your post, lol. Was just an observation. And I agree on Yzerman, I just posted my thoughts on Carp’s article.
As much as I know it’ll upset some people, JD may actually be the best fit. I think Dave Quinn is his type of coach and he still knows a lot of the current guys in the organization.
Wicky, O’Reilly is also one of the top 3 face off guys in the league. But as we know, faceoffs are meaningless.
Dallas too btw. Owner was calling for the heads of his star players by Thanksgiving and now they’re a 95 point team? I give the credit for that turn around to Big Ben. As much as I despise him, he’s a helluva goalie.
James
That’s right, who was it with that pearl of wisdom…? I think it was Alex.
I’ll have to buzz back in the old posts and check.
Good call re Dallas
JPP – In reference to your 5:46 pm post. Sather had a lot of help finding all of those guys. It was no coincidence that the Oilers great drafting went south when their head scout Barry Fraser went south to live in Mexico. A lot of the Oilers success came as a result of the work Fraser did.
Jim Matherson in an October 6, 2014 article about the reunion of the Oilers 1984 Cup wrote:
“Fraser, who joined the Oilers late in the WHA days, was responsible for drafting Kevin Lowe, Mark Messier and Glenn Anderson in rounds 1, 3 and 4 in 1979, Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri and Andy Moog (first, 4th and 7th rounds) in 1980, Grant Fuhr (eighth overall) in 1981 and Finn Raimo Summanen (sixth-round) in 1982. Those eight were all part of the 1984 squad in varying degrees and Fraser pushed to sign defenceman Charlie Huddy, as well, in 1979 when he went undrafted in a six-round draft that summer because of the WHA-NHL merger.”
Some guy named peter s on carp’s blog must be like 10 yrs old lol
Harry Peter?
Black Peter?
Peter Puck?
Pete Peters?
Peter, apparently you forgot to put one of the new cover sheets on your TPS reports…
Lol, you guys crack me up
The whole hiring of a new Rangers President is going to come down to what are the duties and responsibilities. Up until Neil Smith (and later Glen Sather), the Rangers President was always more of a business position with non-hockey men in charge (e.g. Jack Diller). William Jennings was probably the most known, but that even that was more as a business guy as opposed to an on-ice evaluator of talent.
These days hockey Presidents seem to be the people who are setting the tone for organizations and hiring front office personnel who share that tone/vision. Will a new President want his own GM and coach down the line – and how far down the line? Sather has said that Gorton is not getting fired, but how long does that last with a proactive President in charge? If the Rangers do move away from Gorton what happens to the players Gorton has brought in? Do the Rangers then begin another rebuild/retool/re-fill-in-the-blank?
I have seen people mention the likes of Mark Hunter and Kelly McCrimmon, but I would see them wanting to be in control of the organization in terms of day-to-day operations and would likely want the GM’s title as well. McCrimmon’s name has been thrown around in conjunction with Seattle.
Anthony, my take is pretty cut and dry re: the new hire. If you get a guy who wants to take that kind of control you can very easily put your team into a really bad position like Florida did. I happen to think at this point in time Quinn, Gorton and Drury are all a good fit. Not that Gorton has gotten everything right but he has done pretty well. Eventually change is going to happen at one or all of those positions but it’ll be because there’s a reason to make those changes. When you make change for the sake of change it’s risky business.
feel like I said change too many times in that post. It losing it’s meaning if you keep saying it. change change change change…

For those who who want the Rangers to bring in more Canadian players will be happy to know that they signed two undrafted collegiate canucks (both were captains of their respective schools) to ATOs (amateur tryout contracts) in Hartford.
C/RW Lewis Zerter-Gossage (6-2/19o) played four years at Harvard and posted a career high of 18 goals as their captain.
F Shawn McBride (6-2/200) played four years at American International College (AIC) and posted career highs in assists (19) and points (23) as captain. He was an alternate last season. He helped lead AIC to their winningest season and a berth into the NCAA Tournament where they beat the overall #1 seed St. Cloud State 2-1.
Canucks who turned into soft serve college boys don’t count. ..
The Hartford renovation is so blatant they might as well hire Chip and Joanna Gaines as special advisors…
Anyone else looking forward to SJ vs Vegas in round 1??
agree James G …they are happy with Gorton and going to bring in somebody on board with current staffing and plans
If you want to assess GM, review relevant duties since ’15:
Scouting / Draft: TBD (to be kind)
UFA Signings: F (Shatty, Smith, Stoll)
Contract Renewals: C (Step, Shea)
Coach Hire: TBD
Players Acquired via Trade: B (Zika: A, Strome: B+, Lone Wolf: B, Step/Rantaa: B, Yandle No Trade: D)
Players Traded for Futures: TBD
Regarding Hartford, Drury was named Director of Player Personnel 2 months after Gorton was given GM duties in Sept 2015 and in July 2015 Schoenfeld was appointed Asst GM NYR/GM of Hartford.
.
Drury took over GM of Hartford in May of 2017; two years ago. Still impressed…
Who is taking the job of babysitting Dolan and having no say in current direction of the roster?
Somebody who only cares about a paycheck. You are not going to attract the best and brightest…
gotta keep you honest in both blogs Wick and Carp didn’t seem to buy what you were selling either 🙂
and if only i was till 10, there would be time not to go law school!
Assume the next president would want an actual role/say in the process, unless just being hired as a figurehead like Slats has been of late. JD is a good pr move, not sure much more than that though as last thing i’d want to do is replicate his “success” as Prez in St. Louis and Columbus
Gortons’ 4 year reign as GM
3rd in Metro
4th in Metro
8th in Metro
7th in Metro (thanks Derbils)
.
Do you sign up for another 7th or 8th in Metro in the spirit of rebuilding?
You have way too much time on your hands Wicky if you’re researching old posts.
Have me confused with someone else regarding faceoffs.
SN are you advocating for a new GM once they hire a president? To me, that grading is a little tough. FA signings should probably include Vesey who has been a decent player forced to play higher in the lineup than he should have to and re-signing Namestnikov to a decent deal. Plus the Mcleod extension turned out to be a good choice. Claesson has been servicable as well.
As for the trades- Look at where Brassard, Stepan, Raanta and even Yandle are at in their careers right now and I think he gets at least a B+ if not an A.
As for the whole reign post, the team is rebuilding so I don’t expect 2nd or 3rd place finishes while that goes on no matter who the GM is.
upcoming rangers rfas / ufas in the organization
rfa
lettieri – i’d let go
buch – 2 year bridge?
lemieux – 2 year bridge?
pionk – wickys next jersey?
deangelo – 2 year bridge?
claesson – i like but team doesn’t seem to so he’ll be gone
bigras – prob gone
bergman – prob to europe
nell / halverson in goal
ufa – gone
brickley
gilmour
o’gara
tokarski
Add Lettieri, Bergman and Brigas to the gone pile.
As for DeAngelo and Pionk, I think it’ll say a lot about how the organization feels about going forward with them if they trade for Fox. IMO that makes one of those guys very expendable
Next season has got to include Hajek and Lindgren full time at some point. The right side isn’t really a log jam as much as a “get rid of Shatty at any cost” situation.
